Alois Lageder
Alois Lageder is a visionary estate in Alto Adige, where centuries of tradition meet a progressive, biodynamic approach to winemaking. Based in Magreid, at the southern edge of the Dolomites, the Lageder family has farmed these dramatic, high-altitude slopes since 1823. Under the guidance of Alois Lageder and now his son Clemens, the estate has become one of Europe’s most admired producers — a leader in ecological thinking, terroir precision, and the quiet artistry of cool-climate wine.
The estate farms over 50 hectares of Demeter-certified biodynamic vineyards, complemented by long-term partnerships with growers across Alto Adige. Vines are planted on a wide range of altitudes — from 230 to over 900 metres above sea level — allowing for remarkable nuance and natural balance. Farming is holistic and regenerative: cover crops, composting, livestock integration, and lunar rhythms all guide viticultural decisions. The result is fruit with purity, energy, and expression of site.
In the cellar, the process is intuitive and light-handed. Grapes are harvested by hand, and fermentations are spontaneous. Ageing occurs in stainless steel, large oak casks, amphorae, or concrete eggs — depending on the varietal and the character of the vintage. Sulphur is used sparingly, and intervention is minimal. The goal is to express varietal character and vineyard origin with clarity, freshness, and poise.
The wines are luminous, linear, and full of altitude. Pinot Grigio is textured and saline — a far cry from commercial softness, with alpine herbs and mineral length. Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, and Sauvignon Blanc are taut and expressive, while reds like Lagrein, Pinot Noir, and Merlot show restraint, savoury depth, and fine tannins. The ‘Comets’ range explores small, experimental bottlings — natural-leaning wines shaped by curiosity and freedom. Across the portfolio, there is a line of brightness, silence, and lift.
What defines Alois Lageder is not only its place, but its philosophy — a belief that wine should reflect the interconnectedness of nature, people, and time.
These are wines that breathe alpine air — composed, vivid, and rooted in a future where elegance and ecology walk hand in hand.
