Ansgar Clüsserath
Ansgar Clüsserath is one of the Mosel’s quietly brilliant estates — a family-run winery in the village of Trittenheim where steep slopes, slate, and stillness shape wines of remarkable delicacy and depth. Founded in the 17th century and now led by Eva Clüsserath, one of Germany’s most thoughtful and intuitive winemakers, the estate has earned a loyal following for Rieslings that whisper rather than declare — wines that express site and season with clarity, not ornament.
The domaine cultivates six hectares of Riesling, much of it in the estate’s crown jewel: Trittenheimer Apotheke, a steep, south-facing slope of blue slate that rises dramatically above the Mosel River. Farming is meticulous and sustainable, carried out entirely by hand due to the vineyard’s incline. Old, ungrafted vines are preserved where possible, yielding fruit of natural concentration and vivid tension. Harvest is selective and late, allowing for both dry and Prädikat styles depending on the vintage’s conditions.
In the cellar, Eva works with native yeasts, long fermentations, and minimal handling. Fermentations can stretch for months, allowing the wines to develop nuance and inner balance. Ageing takes place in stainless steel and large, neutral oak, with extended lees contact to enhance mouthfeel and preserve purity. There is no recipe — only responsiveness to the fruit, the vintage, and the silent guidance of the vineyard.
The wines are crystalline and alive. Trittenheimer Apotheke Rieslings — whether dry, off-dry, or sweet — shimmer with citrus zest, white peach, crushed slate, and a cool herbal edge. The balance between fruit, acid, and texture is fine-tuned and graceful, with each wine showing a distinct arc of energy and minerality. These are not Rieslings made for instant impact, but for slow unfolding — wines that reward attention, silence, and time.
What defines Ansgar Clüsserath is not ambition, but attunement — a philosophy built on humility before the vineyard, and an instinctive understanding of when to act and when to wait.
These are wines that move like riverlight over stone — precise, reflective, and quietly enduring.
