Bladnoch
Nestled on the banks of the River Bladnoch in Dumfries and Galloway, Bladnoch is one of Scotland's oldest independently owned whisky distilleries. Its story began in 1817, when brothers John and Thomas McClelland established a small distillery on their family farm. Over the following century, successive generations expanded the business, earning Bladnoch the affectionate title of “Queen of the Lowlands” and establishing its place in Scotland's whisky-making heritage.
Bladnoch's journey has been far from straightforward. Throughout its history, the distillery has changed ownership several times and experienced periods of closure, yet its connection to the local community has endured. A significant turning point came in 2015, when Australian entrepreneur David Prior acquired the distillery with a vision to restore its former glory. Following extensive renovations and investment in modern equipment, production resumed in 2017, marking a new beginning for the historic site.
In 2019, renowned Master Distiller Dr Nick Savage joined the team, bringing experience from The Macallan and a fresh perspective on whisky-making. Under his guidance, Bladnoch has embraced a distinctive 'taste-first' philosophy, combining traditional craftsmanship with a willingness to explore new ideas. This approach reflects the independent spirit and determination that have defined the distillery for more than two centuries.
Today, Bladnoch continues to celebrate its Galloway roots while looking confidently towards the future. With a remarkable history of resilience, a renewed commitment to quality and a bold approach to innovation, the distillery remains a distinctive name in the world of Scotch whisky.
