Brokenwood Wines

Brokenwood is one of Australia’s most respected and enduring wine estates — a name rooted in the red soils of the Hunter Valley, yet now equally renowned for its cool-climate expressions from across the country. Founded in 1970 by a trio of Sydney solicitors as a hobby vineyard, Brokenwood has grown into a benchmark producer under the long-time stewardship of Chief Winemaker Iain Riggs, and now Chief Winemaker Stuart Hordern, continuing a legacy of thoughtful innovation and site-led winemaking.

The heart of Brokenwood lies in its commitment to expressing the distinctiveness of terroir — whether from its original Graveyard Vineyard in Pokolbin, or from cooler sites in Beechworth, Orange, and McLaren Vale. The Graveyard Vineyard, planted on heavy clay soils, is home to some of the most age-worthy and refined Shiraz in the Hunter, while high-altitude vineyards across New South Wales and Victoria bring structure, freshness, and aromatic lift to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Semillon.

Viticulture is carried out with sustainability and longevity in mind. The team works with growers across regions, focusing on low yields, precise canopy management, and vineyard health — all in service of crafting wines that reflect vintage and site with balance and energy. The winery's state-of-the-art facility, opened in 2021, reflects Brokenwood's continued investment in precision, quality, and sustainability.

In the cellar, winemaking is defined by restraint and clarity. Semillon, the Hunter’s flagship white, is picked early, fermented cool in stainless steel, and released without oak — resulting in a wine that is pure, dry, and built to age. Shiraz from the Hunter is medium-bodied, savoury, and structured, while Syrah from cooler regions is darker-fruited and more spice-driven. Chardonnay, particularly from Beechworth and Orange, shows struck match, citrus, and elegant oak integration. Across all varieties, the style is crisp, varietally true, and built for both immediate pleasure and cellar longevity.

The wines are composed, expressive, and distinctly regional. ILR Reserve Semillon is a Hunter icon — taut, lemon-edged, and designed to evolve gracefully over decades. Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is plush yet poised, with dark fruit, earth, and gentle spice. The regional series — including Forest Edge Pinot Noir, Beechworth Chardonnay, and Verdelho — reflect Brokenwood’s expansive reach and commitment to craft across sites.

What defines Brokenwood is its unshaken clarity — a winery that honours Australia’s past while shaping its modern voice, one vineyard, one vintage at a time.

These are wines built on trust — in site, in heritage, and in the quiet strength of doing things well, year after year.
