Cable Bay
Cable Bay is a modern, multidimensional wine estate where Waiheke Island’s maritime stillness meets precise, expressive winemaking. Established in 1998, Cable Bay has become one of the island’s most respected producers — crafting wines from both its home vineyards overlooking the Hauraki Gulf and select sites across Marlborough and Central Otago. With a focus on sustainability, site-driven character, and architectural clarity, Cable Bay delivers wines that echo the island’s natural elegance.
The Waiheke vineyard lies on north-facing slopes of clay-rich soils, ideal for ripening Syrah, Chardonnay, and Bordeaux varietals with natural concentration and savoury depth. Across the water, Cable Bay sources Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and other varietals from certified sustainable growers in Marlborough and Central Otago — bringing a South Island freshness into balance with Waiheke’s richness. All vineyard decisions are guided by a light environmental footprint and long-term soil vitality.
In the winery, the approach is clean, intentional, and driven by expression of site. Whites are whole-bunch pressed and fermented cool, with selected lots aged on lees or in old oak for texture. Reds are hand-picked, fermented in small open-top tanks, and aged in French oak — restrained in percentage new — to frame, not obscure. The winemaking team seeks purity, shape, and length in every cuvée.
The wines are polished, regional, and composed. Waiheke Syrah shows dark berry, olive tapenade, and lifted florals, with savoury depth and fine tannins. Chardonnay is creamy yet saline — ripe stone fruit, subtle oak, and coastal freshness. Sauvignon Blanc, from Marlborough, is bright and mineral, with citrus peel and herbal lift over a crisp, flinty core. Pinot Gris, Rosé, and Pinot Noir round out the range with calm energy and clarity of line. Across the portfolio, the style is confident, detailed, and tuned to the natural rhythm of each growing region.
What defines Cable Bay is its quiet duality — a winery shaped by both island calm and mainland lift, delivering wines that move easily between texture and freshness, structure and ease.
These are wines that carry the breath of their landscapes — layered, luminous, and crafted to reflect New Zealand’s light through a coastal lens.
