Cave de Lugny

Cave de Lugny is a leading cooperative in the Mâconnais, southern Burgundy, known for crafting bright, varietally pure Chardonnay from limestone-rich soils. Founded in 1926 and based in the village of Lugny, this grower-owned collective brings together over 400 vineyard families, producing wines that offer both accessibility and authenticity. At the heart of Cave de Lugny is a simple idea: to make wines that reflect the charm and clarity of the Mâconnais terroir, while remaining rooted in craftsmanship and community.

Vineyards stretch across more than 1,400 hectares in the Mâcon-Lugny, Mâcon-Villages, Mâcon-Chardonnay, and Crémant de Bourgogne appellations, with parcels planted on ancient Jurassic limestone and marl. The region’s temperate climate and rolling hills provide ideal conditions for Chardonnay — yielding fruit with freshness, texture, and soft minerality. Sustainability is central to the cooperative’s ethos, with increasing adoption of organic and eco-conscious farming practices.

In the cellar, the approach is precise and minimal. Chardonnay is fermented in stainless steel to preserve fruit expression and aged briefly on lees to build mouthfeel and roundness. A small portion of cuvées see oak or extended ageing, but most are made to showcase brightness and aromatic purity. Crémant de Bourgogne, one of the region’s most celebrated sparkling wines, is crafted using the traditional method with extended lees ageing for elegance and finesse.

The wines are clean, supple, and regionally faithful. Mâcon-Lugny Les Charmes is a flagship cuvée — pear, white blossom, lemon peel, and a touch of almond over a soft, mineral palate. Mâcon-Villages offers orchard fruit and chalky lift, while Crémant de Bourgogne Brut is fresh and creamy, with citrus, brioche, and a finely beaded mousse. Across the range, the wines strike a balance between generosity and lift — approachable, versatile, and distinctly southern Burgundian in tone.

What defines Cave de Lugny is its clarity of purpose — a producer that champions regional expression through craftsmanship and collaboration, delivering wines of honest pleasure and polished charm.

These are wines that speak softly but clearly — bright, balanced, and shaped by the quiet hills and limestone bones of the Mâconnais.
