Chateau d'Armailhac

Château d’Armailhac sits on hallowed ground in Pauillac, its vineyards a continuation of the same deep gravel ridge that nourishes Mouton Rothschild. Once known as Mouton d’Armailhacq, the estate has undergone multiple name changes over the centuries, yet its soul has remained rooted in tradition. Since 1933, it has belonged to the Rothschild family, and today it operates under the same meticulous care as its more famous sibling — a Fifth Growth with quiet First Growth proximity, both in geography and attention.

The vineyard spans 76 hectares in classic Médoc terroir: gravel-rich soils over limestone and clay, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with a notable percentage of Petit Verdot. The vines, averaging around 40 years of age, are tended with precision and balance — not showy, but deeply intentional. In the cellar, vinification occurs in stainless steel, with ageing in carefully selected oak barrels, including a portion of new wood each year. The winemaking philosophy is rooted in clarity, allowing the strength of the site to speak through proportion and polish.

The resulting wine is pure Pauillac in tone, yet with a rounder, more welcoming edge. Cabernet Sauvignon brings cassis, pencil shavings, and structure; Merlot softens the middle with dark plum and floral lift. There is a quiet touch of spice and cedar, a ripple of gravelly tannin, and a finish that lingers without force. Each vintage captures both the authority of its appellation and the charm of its individuality — structured, but never stern.

Château d’Armailhac may not command the spotlight, but it holds its place with calm certainty. It is a wine shaped not by ambition, but by stewardship — by the Rothschild family’s patient belief in the land, and in the legacy of Pauillac. Under the guidance of Baron Philippe’s descendants, the estate has steadily refined its voice, evolving with grace rather than urgency.

This is a Pauillac for those who seek balance over brawn, a wine that reflects its noble neighbors while offering something more immediately open, yet no less age-worthy. Château d’Armailhac is classic Bordeaux, quietly confident — a name that has changed, but a soul that has endured.
