Chateau de Sales
Château de Sales is a name of quiet stature in Pomerol, defined not by grand façades or global fanfare, but by continuity, authenticity, and one of the most storied family legacies on the Right Bank. Established in the 16th century and still owned by the same family today, it is the largest estate in Pomerol under a single name, encompassing 47 hectares — a rarity in this patchwork appellation. Unlike many of its neighbors, de Sales is not a château of opulence, but of understatement and patience, long admired for its consistency and charm.
The vineyard, situated in the northwestern part of Pomerol, is planted predominantly to Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon rounding out the blend. The soils — a mix of gravel, sand, and clay — yield wines of gentle structure and aromatic clarity. The viticulture follows a sustainable, reasoned approach, with careful attention to the health of the vines and soils. In the cellar, fermentation is carried out in cement and stainless steel, with ageing in French oak barrels, only a modest portion of which is new. The result is a wine that privileges expression over extraction, balance over boldness.
Château de Sales offers a lighter, more floral interpretation of Pomerol. Merlot brings soft red fruit, plum, and raspberry, while Cabernet Franc introduces lift, spice, and a touch of earth. The wine is medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a sense of freshness that sets it apart from more concentrated examples in the appellation. Notes of violets, sandalwood, and dried herbs emerge on the finish, giving it an understated elegance and a graceful aging arc.
What defines Château de Sales is not intensity, but integrity. It remains a bastion of classical Pomerol style — approachable, expressive, and unforced. The estate has never chased trends or yielded to modern excess; instead, it has deepened its commitment to crafting wines that reflect both the land and the lineage from which they come.
Château de Sales is for those who appreciate subtlety — for those who believe that elegance lies not in volume, but in proportion. It is a wine shaped by heritage and humility, offering a quiet, enduring pleasure with every vintage.
