Chateau Ferriere

Château Ferrière is a Margaux estate defined by its dual identity: one rooted in tradition, the other reaching forward with intention. Classified as a Third Growth in 1855, it remained a quiet presence for much of the 20th century — modest in profile, yet rich in potential. That potential was awakened in 1992 when Claire Villars-Lurton assumed stewardship, bringing with her a bold yet thoughtful vision. Under her guidance, Ferrière has been transformed into one of Bordeaux’s most progressive and quietly expressive estates.

The vineyard encompasses 24 hectares, primarily composed of deep Garonne gravel — a classic Margaux terroir that offers both drainage and heat retention. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the plantings, followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. From the vineyard to the cellar, Château Ferrière is farmed according to biodynamic principles, placing it among a small handful of Médoc crus classés fully committed to ecological viticulture. Vineyard treatments are natural and seasonal, harvests are manual and precise, and fermentation is parcel-specific, carried out with indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place in a thoughtful mix of oak barrels, amphorae, and large-format casks — always seeking balance over dominance.

The wine is unmistakably Margaux, but told in a quieter, more lyrical register. Cabernet brings structure and length, with notes of blackberry, graphite, and crushed violet. Merlot adds roundness, tobacco leaf, and sweet spice. There is a palpable energy in the glass — lifted aromatics, fine-boned tannins, and a mineral-driven core that lends freshness and persistence. Ferrière’s elegance is never imposed, but drawn slowly from the soil — a wine that speaks in precise, deliberate tones rather than volume.

What distinguishes Château Ferrière is its philosophy of stewardship. This is not a revival driven by trend, but a deep belief in the vineyard’s intrinsic voice. Claire Villars-Lurton has shaped the estate with care and conviction, creating a wine that mirrors both her ecological values and her commitment to Margaux’s quiet intensity. The estate’s path is not only about restoring its classification, but about redefining what a grand cru classé can mean today — vibrant, responsible, and deeply expressive.

Château Ferrière is for those who seek nuance over notoriety — wines that evolve with grace, shaped not only by gravel and vine, but by vision, respect, and the rhythm of the land.
