Chateau Gazin

Chateau Gazin

Château Gazin sits on the eastern flank of Pomerol’s famed plateau, a domaine of quiet confidence and classical form. Once part of the estate of the Knights Hospitallers in the Middle Ages, the land was long associated with care, devotion, and constancy — values that still echo in the estate’s present-day philosophy. Owned by the Bailliencourt dit Courcol family since 1917, Gazin remains a family-run property in a region where tradition often whispers louder than fashion.

The vineyard covers 26 hectares on Pomerol’s prized blue clay and gravel soils, adjacent to the hallowed ground of Château Pétrus. Merlot is the heart of the estate, comprising around 90% of the plantings, with the remainder in Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The terroir brings natural richness and structure, while the estate’s approach favors balance and refinement. Vineyard work is carried out with rigor and restraint, and fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel vats, followed by élevage in oak barrels, with about half new wood — a touch designed to support, not overshadow.

Gazin’s wine is a pure, architectural expression of Pomerol. Merlot provides plush texture and deep fruit — plum, black cherry, and cocoa — while Cabernet Franc introduces lift and fine-grained tension. The structure is ample yet composed, with broad, velvety tannins and a lingering mineral edge. Notes of truffle, forest floor, and cedar unfold with age, revealing a wine that evolves not in fireworks, but in quiet layering. It is a Pomerol of breadth and polish, more stately than showy, and built for longevity.

What defines Château Gazin is its constancy — a commitment to crafting wine that honors both place and past, without noise or deviation. There is no trend-chasing here, only a steady hand and a long view. The family’s role is one of stewardship, preserving the essence of Gazin while refining the details year after year.

Château Gazin is for those who seek classicism in Pomerol — a wine of depth, grace, and grounded elegance. It is not meant to dazzle at first glance, but to endure across time, offering warmth, structure, and a quiet echo of the land from which it comes.
