Château Guiraud

Château Guiraud

Steeped in heritage yet driven by innovation, Château Guiraud is one of the grand names of Sauternes. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru in the 1855 classification, the estate has long stood at the vanguard of sweet wine production in Bordeaux’s southern reaches. In recent decades, it has embraced a modern vision rooted in biodiversity, organic farming, and profound respect for its singular terroir.

Located in the heart of Sauternes, the estate spans 128 hectares, of which 100 are planted to vine. The vineyard’s mosaic of gravel and sandy clay soils provides a perfect cradle for Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, while the humid microclimate—tempered by nearby forests and watercourses—encourages the development of noble rot, Botrytis cinerea, essential to the alchemy of Sauternes. Château Guiraud was the first 1855 Grand Cru Classé to achieve organic certification (2011), a commitment reflected in its vibrant, living soils and expressive fruit.

The estate’s approach to winemaking is deliberate and exacting. Grapes are harvested by hand, through multiple selective passes, to capture berries at the ideal stage of botrytised concentration. Fermentation occurs in French oak barrels, with élevage extending over 18 to 24 months. The resulting wines are layered, textural, and complex—offering a balance of opulence and crystalline freshness that defines the house style.

Signature cuvées include Château Guiraud Sauternes, the flagship wine, which marries honeyed apricot and exotic spice with saline precision. The “G” de Guiraud is a dry white crafted from the same noble vines, vibrant and citrus-driven, showcasing the estate’s deft touch with Sauvignon and Semillon. Limited parcels such as Petit Guiraud offer an earlier-drinking style, accessible yet unmistakably refined.

Philosophically, Château Guiraud is a study in balance—between nature and nurture, richness and restraint, past and future. Its wines are not simply sweet; they are architectural, aromatic, and alive, shaped by time and place with rare clarity.

From mist-shrouded mornings to golden-hued harvests, Château Guiraud distills the quiet magic of Sauternes into liquid light.
