Chateau Margaux
Château Margaux is more than a First Growth — it is a symbol of Bordeaux’s most delicate equilibrium: power rendered as elegance, architecture expressed in aroma. Situated in the heart of the Margaux appellation and classified Premier Grand Cru in 1855, the estate’s legacy stretches back to the 12th century. But its modern identity was shaped in the late 20th century under the stewardship of the Mentzelopoulos family, who have elevated Margaux from greatness to near-mythology. Today, under the guidance of Corinne Mentzelopoulos and managing director Philippe Bascaules, the estate continues to craft wines that are as graceful as they are enduring.
The vineyard spans approximately 82 hectares, planted on deep Garonne gravel with excellent drainage — soils that are especially suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which forms the core of the blend. Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc provide nuance and layering. Farming follows a philosophy of sustainability and quiet precision, with increasing attention to biodiversity, organic principles, and parcel-level observation. The cellar — redesigned by Norman Foster — is as architectural as the wine itself, a space that blends classicism with innovation. Vinification is gentle and exacting, followed by élevage in 100% new French oak for the grand vin.
Château Margaux’s wine is a study in refinement. Cabernet Sauvignon brings clarity, blackcurrant, and perfectly etched tannins. Merlot adds charm, texture, and floral depth. The aromatics are haunting — violets, graphite, forest floor, cedar — and the palate is seamless from start to finish. There is weight without heaviness, detail without austerity. The finish is long, lifted, and laced with the signature Margaux perfume: ethereal, persistent, unforgettable.
What distinguishes Château Margaux is its sense of serenity — the way it resists force in favor of finesse, expressing power not through extraction, but through proportion and grace. It is a wine that ages not just beautifully, but poetically, revealing layers of complexity over decades, never losing its composure. The estate’s philosophy is rooted in humility before the land, the vintage, and the passage of time.
Château Margaux is for those who seek Bordeaux at its most lyrical — a wine that doesn’t shout, but sings. It is a First Growth not only by classification, but by character: luminous, balanced, and enduring in every sense.
