Chateau Phelan Segur

Chateau Phelan Segur

Château Phélan Ségur is one of Saint-Estèphe’s most refined and forward-looking estates — a property that unites Médoc tradition with quiet innovation and a deep respect for place. Founded in the early 19th century by Irishman Bernard Phélan, the estate has long been recognized for its elegant structure and graceful evolution. In recent decades, under the guidance of the Gardinier family and now the Lorenzetti family (also owners of Château d’Issan and Château Pedesclaux), Phélan Ségur has entered a new era — one defined by investment in precision, sustainability, and expressive purity.

The vineyard spans 70 hectares in a single block overlooking the Gironde estuary, planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The soils are a patchwork of deep gravel, clay, and limestone — classic Saint-Estèphe terroir, lending both power and mineral freshness. The estate practices sustainable viticulture, with conversion to organic underway, and great attention is paid to preserving biodiversity and soil health. In the winery, recently rebuilt with a focus on gravity-flow and parcel-level vinification, fermentation occurs in stainless steel and concrete vats, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, approximately 50% new.

Phélan Ségur’s wine captures the essence of Saint-Estèphe in a more polished register. Cabernet Sauvignon lends its signature structure — blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar — while Merlot brings roundness, plum, and a quiet floral lift. The tannins are firm yet finely textured, offering depth without austerity. With air and age, the wine reveals notes of tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and warm earth, all delivered with a sense of balance and restraint. It is a wine of classic form, but modern precision.

What defines Château Phélan Ségur is its clarity of purpose: to express the strength of Saint-Estèphe through the lens of elegance. This is not a château that relies on power alone, but one that layers detail, texture, and poise into every vintage. Under the Lorenzetti family's stewardship, the estate has embraced innovation without losing sight of its roots.

Château Phélan Ségur is for those who seek Left Bank Bordeaux with both structure and sensitivity — a wine that reflects its terroir with quiet conviction, crafted for both cellaring and pleasure, and grounded in the enduring grace of Saint-Estèphe.
