Chateau Sigalas Rabaud
Château Sigalas Rabaud is a jewel of Sauternes — intimate in scale, grand in history, and defined by an unwavering commitment to purity and finesse. As the smallest of the classified growths of 1855, the estate occupies a singular place among its peers: a Premier Cru Classé producing wines of remarkable delicacy and crystalline precision. With roots reaching back to the 17th century, its modern form was shaped by the Sigalas family in the 19th, and today it is guided by Laure de Lambert Compeyrot, whose stewardship honors both heritage and innovation.
The vineyard spans just 14 hectares on the fabled Sauternes gravelly ridge of Bommes, perched across from Château d’Yquem. The soils are composed of deep gravel over clay — ideal for nurturing Sémillon, which dominates the plantings, with a touch of Sauvignon Blanc. The estate benefits from the unique microclimate of the Ciron and Garonne rivers, which promotes the development of Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot that concentrates sugars and complexity. Harvesting is done by hand, in multiple passes through the vineyard, with a discerning eye for botrytised berries. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, followed by long ageing — typically 18 to 24 months — to bring texture, lift, and length.
The wine of Sigalas Rabaud is radiant and refined. Sémillon provides honeyed richness, citrus confit, and waxy depth; Sauvignon Blanc contributes energy, spice, and floral lift. Aromas of candied orange peel, saffron, white peach, and chamomile bloom from the glass, while the palate is silky and vibrant, structured by tension rather than weight. There is sweetness, but it is carried on a beam of freshness — a signature of the estate’s graceful, understated style. With age, the wine gathers complexity: layers of apricot, toasted almond, tea leaf, and wet stone emerge, always guided by balance.
What defines Château Sigalas Rabaud is its clarity of purpose. This is not a Sauternes of opulence, but of focus — a wine that reveals itself slowly, with detail and restraint. Under Laure de Lambert Compeyrot’s leadership, the estate continues to explore sustainability, terroir transparency, and the evolving beauty of sweet wine in a changing climate.
Château Sigalas Rabaud is for those who seek Sauternes at its most elegant and articulate — a wine of sunlight and stillness, crafted with precision, and destined to endure with grace.
