Chateau Trotanoy
Château Trotanoy is Pomerol at its most complete — a wine of density, dignity, and quiet force. Situated on the western edge of the plateau, this historic estate has, for centuries, expressed the deep voice of clay, crafting wines of rare longevity and textural gravitas. Acquired by Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, Trotanoy has been carefully nurtured into one of Pomerol’s most revered properties — not through noise or expansion, but through patient viticulture, restrained winemaking, and fidelity to terroir.
The vineyard spans 7.2 hectares, planted predominantly to Merlot with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. The soils are a mosaic of gravel and dense, iron-rich clay — including patches so hard they are locally known as mottes de fer, or “iron clods.” These conditions naturally restrict vigor and yield, concentrating the fruit and lending the wine its inimitable structure. Farming is precise and minimal, with each vine tended by hand. In the cellar, vinification is traditional and gentle, with fermentation in concrete and ageing in French oak, 50–60% new, for around 18 months — all aimed at preserving the wine’s natural architecture.
Trotanoy’s wine is richly textured, deeply mineral, and enduringly elegant. Merlot offers plum, black cherry, and earthy depth, while Cabernet Franc adds lift and graphite tension. Aromas of violets, black truffle, dark chocolate, and ironstone emerge slowly, unfolding in quiet layers. The tannins are abundant yet polished — framing the palate without closing it — and the finish is long, resonant, and sculpted. Though often impenetrable in youth, Trotanoy blossoms with age, gaining aromatic breadth and refined power while retaining its foundational calm.
What defines Château Trotanoy is its sense of stillness — a wine that neither rushes nor compromises, shaped by clay, time, and care. It is not made to charm immediately, but to reveal itself gradually, with depth and permanence. Under the Moueix family’s guidance, the estate has remained unwavering in its philosophy: to let terroir speak, and to elevate it only through precision and patience.
Château Trotanoy is for those who seek the soul of Pomerol in its most grounded form — a wine of inner strength and quiet confidence, built not to dazzle, but to endure.
