Clearview Estate
Set against the coastal curve of Te Awanga in Hawke’s Bay, Clearview Estate is a story of vision, resilience, and pioneering spirit. Established in 1987 by Tim Turvey and Helena van den Berg, the estate transformed a wind-swept coastal site into one of New Zealand’s most respected boutique wineries—known for its generosity of style, vineyard-driven character, and fearless approach to winemaking.
Situated just metres from the Pacific Ocean, the estate’s vineyards benefit from a maritime climate, gravelly alluvial soils, and long, sun-filled growing seasons. The proximity to the sea tempers extremes, extending hang time and allowing varieties such as Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen with intensity and freshness. Sustainably farmed, the vines are managed for balance and expression, reflecting the natural rhythms of the site.
Clearview’s cellar philosophy is deeply hands-on and intuitively expressive. Fermentations are tailored to variety and vintage, often wild, with barrel work playing a central role in shaping texture and depth. The hallmark here is richness—wines that are full-flavoured, layered, and proudly regional, yet always underpinned by acidity and structure.
The estate’s icon is the Clearview “Reserve Chardonnay”, a benchmark of bold Hawke’s Bay style—ripe stone fruit, toasted almond, flint, and a luxurious palate framed by fine oak. It is a wine that has garnered acclaim both nationally and internationally, year after year. The Enigma, a Merlot-dominant Bordeaux blend, showcases dark berries, baking spice, and earthy undertones, while the Cape Kidnappers Syrah delivers coastal perfume, peppered elegance, and savoury finesse.
Clearview Estate is both rooted and restless—anchored by a deep love of place, yet unafraid to experiment and evolve. Its cellar door, nestled beneath century-old Norfolk pines, is a gathering place for those drawn to authenticity, warmth, and the coastal wildness of Te Awanga.
Each bottle carries the salt-tinged breeze of Hawke’s Bay—generous, spirited, and unmistakably Clearview.
