Coto de Hayas

Coto de Hayas

Rooted in the rugged beauty of Campo de Borja, Coto de Hayas embodies the bold, expressive spirit of Aragonese viticulture. Produced by Bodegas Aragonesas, whose lineage reaches back to 1984, the brand is a tribute to Garnacha — the region’s native jewel — cultivated from old vines nestled in the foothills of the Moncayo.

The vineyards lie between 450 and 700 meters above sea level, where stony, iron-rich soils and dramatic diurnal shifts forge grapes of vibrant ripeness and lifted aromatics. These climatic extremes — sun-drenched days, cool nights, persistent winds — shape fruit of natural intensity and poise. Garnacha thrives here, alongside Syrah, Tempranillo, and Cabernet Sauvignon, in plots that combine modern management with deep-rooted tradition.

Vinification at Coto de Hayas is a careful choreography of fruit preservation and structure. Grapes are harvested at peak expression, often from vines over 30 years of age, and vinified in stainless steel with gentle extraction. Select cuvées see aging in French and American oak, imparting depth without distraction. The goal is balance — a wine that captures the untamed energy of the land while remaining composed in the glass.

Their emblematic Garnacha showcases red cherry, wild herbs, and a touch of licorice, carried on a supple, textured palate. Blends add dimension: the Crianza interlaces ripe forest fruits with toasted spice, while the Reserva deepens into notes of cocoa, leather, and warm earth — a wine of length and quiet authority. Whites and rosés, though lesser known, are fresh and lively, offering bright stone fruit and floral nuance.

Though Campo de Borja may not boast the fame of Spain’s marquee regions, Coto de Hayas stands as a quiet champion — a producer of authentic, character-driven wines that speak fluently of place. It is wine made with intention, not ornament — rooted in the earth, resonant in the glass.

With each pour, Coto de Hayas distills the wild grace of Aragon — honest, enduring, and fiercely expressive.
