Dicey

Dicey is the living expression of Bannockburn’s elemental rhythms — a winery forged by brothers James and Matt Dicey, whose roots in Central Otago run as deep as the ancient gravels beneath their vines. Raised amidst the pioneering legacy of their father Robin, a cornerstone of the region’s viticultural rise, the brothers distill decades of familial knowledge into a bold, focused pursuit: wines of place, precision, and purpose. Founded in 2020, Dicey reflects a departure from convention and a return to authenticity — where identity begins in the soil and resonates in every glass.

The vineyards — The Inlet, Black Rabbit, and Swansong — are all family-owned and situated in the varied soils and elevations of Bannockburn. Each plot is distinct: The Inlet rests on deep river gravels, Black Rabbit on fractured schist, and Swansong on eroded clay slopes. Organically farmed or in conversion, these sites are tended with reverence. The brothers embrace cover crops, composting, and biochar to nurture soil health and biodiversity, fostering a self-sustaining environment where vines thrive without excess.

In the cellar, Matt Dicey’s winemaking is grounded in restraint. Native yeasts guide fermentation. There is no fining, no filtration, no heavy hand — just a quiet deference to what the vineyard gives. Neutral oak barrels allow texture to build gently, never overshadowing character. The result is a suite of wines that feel unforced and intimate, speaking with clarity and resonance of the landscapes they emerge from.

Pinot Noir leads the narrative — pure, precise, and site-specific. Single-vineyard expressions such as Black Rabbit and The Inlet showcase layers of red fruit, spice, and mineral tension. A rare and vivid Gamay brings juicy vibrancy; Chenin Blanc and Riesling channel Central Otago’s cool light into finely balanced wines of energy and grace. Even Pinot Gris and Chardonnay find distinctive, textural voices in the Dicey portfolio. Beyond bottle, innovation flows — their Dice by Dicey boxed Pinot Noir is a quiet revolution in sustainable packaging, delivering both elegance and environmental conscience.

Dicey is not merely a name but a philosophy — that true wine is grown, not made. A story of people, place, and patience, written vintage by vintage into the contours of Bannockburn itself.
