Dr. Loosen
Dr. Loosen is a modern ambassador for the Mosel — a historic family estate that has brought German Riesling to the world stage with clarity, charisma, and uncompromising finesse. With a winemaking lineage that stretches back over 200 years, the estate entered a new era in 1988 under Ernst Loosen, whose vision redefined the potential of dry and off-dry Rieslings from steep slate slopes. Under his stewardship, Dr. Loosen has become a benchmark not just for the Mosel, but for expressive white wine globally — combining tradition with exacting detail and a deep respect for nature.
The estate comprises around 20 hectares of old, ungrafted Riesling vines, planted on some of the Mosel’s most revered sites: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Ürziger Würzgarten, Bernkasteler Lay, and Erdener Prälat, among others. These steep, south-facing vineyards rest on ancient slate soils that impart signature minerality and electric tension. Vineyard work is meticulous — hand-harvested, low-intervention, with an increasing shift toward sustainable and regenerative practices. Many vines are over 100 years old, producing low yields and intensely concentrated fruit.
In the cellar, vinification is guided by precision and respect. Fermentations are spontaneous, often long and slow, in stainless steel or traditional old oak casks. For the dry wines, clarity and structure are key; for the Prädikat styles, balance between sweetness and acidity is everything. There is no manipulation, only patience — allowing each vineyard and vintage to articulate itself without interference.
The wines are luminous and layered. Kabinett and Spätlese styles show crystalline purity — green apple, lime blossom, slate, and sea spray — dancing on a razor’s edge of sweetness and acid. Grosses Gewächs (GG) bottlings from Grand Cru vineyards deliver dry intensity, deep minerality, and long, resonant finishes. Across the portfolio, the wines are marked by tension, energy, and a remarkable sense of place — Rieslings that age not only gracefully, but ethereally.
What defines Dr. Loosen is its fusion of heritage and curiosity — a house rooted in its landscape, yet always open to evolution. Ernst Loosen’s philosophy centers on listening: to vineyard, vintage, and vine. Through this quiet rigor, the wines express not only terroir, but movement — a kind of flow that feels both geological and alive.
Dr. Loosen is for those who seek Riesling with resonance — wines of shimmer and structure, born of stone, air, and time, crafted with both discipline and joy.
