Hunters
Hunter’s Wines is one of the foundational producers of Marlborough, a pioneering estate that helped place New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc on the world stage. Established in 1979 by Ernie and Jane Hunter, the winery quickly rose to international acclaim in the early 1980s, introducing a new, vivid expression of Sauvignon Blanc that defined the region’s voice. Today, under the direction of Jane Hunter CNZM OBE — often referred to as the "First Lady of New Zealand Wine" — the family-owned estate continues to craft wines of precision, vibrancy, and approachability.
The estate vineyards are located across Rapaura, in the Wairau Valley — Marlborough’s golden mile for aromatic whites. The soils are free-draining alluvial gravels, ideal for developing crisp acidity and ripe, concentrated flavour. Sustainability is central to the Hunter’s philosophy, with Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand certification and a focus on biodiversity, water efficiency, and soil regeneration.
In the winery, the approach is clean and expressive. Sauvignon Blanc is fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures to preserve aromatics, with extended lees contact for texture and mid-palate weight. Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Riesling are crafted with a balance of fruit purity and gentle complexity, while Pinot Noir is fermented in small batches and aged in seasoned French oak to retain freshness and finesse. The MiruMiru™ Méthode Traditionnelle sparkling range is a house specialty — bottle-fermented and aged on lees, reflecting the estate’s quiet mastery of traditional method wines.
The wines are lively, polished, and true to place. Sauvignon Blanc offers classic Marlborough brightness — gooseberry, lime, passionfruit, and flint. Pinot Gris and Riesling are textural and pure, with a fine acid line. Chardonnay is citrus-driven and creamy, while Pinot Noir shows red berry, spice, and subtle earth. The MiruMiru™ NV Brut delivers finesse, citrus zest, and brioche — elegant, refreshing, and consistently ranked among New Zealand’s best sparkling wines.
What defines Hunter’s Wines is its steadfast clarity — a winery that helped shape Marlborough’s voice and continues to refine it with grace and purpose.
These are wines that echo the brightness of their beginnings — fresh, focused, and crafted to speak with the confident charm of a region that changed the world of wine.
