Kumeu River

Kumeu River is New Zealand’s reference point for Chardonnay — a family-owned estate that has quietly, and consistently, produced wines of Burgundian grace from the clay and limestone-rich hills west of Auckland. Established in 1944 by Croatian immigrants Mick and Katé Brajkovich, the estate remains in the hands of the Brajkovich family today, led by Michael Brajkovich MW, New Zealand’s first Master of Wine and a global authority on Chardonnay.

The vineyards lie just 20 kilometres from the Tasman Sea, in Kumeu, where maritime breezes and early morning mists temper the ripening season, preserving acidity and building phenolic structure. Soils of clay loam and sandstone lend mineral nuance, while old vine parcels — some dating back to the 1960s — provide natural balance and depth. The estate is farmed with care, using sustainable practices and close canopy management to enhance fruit purity and aromatic precision.

In the cellar, the approach is Burgundian in spirit but firmly grounded in place. All Chardonnay is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, and wild-fermented in French oak barrels, with full malolactic fermentation and extended lees ageing. Oak use is judicious and finely integrated, always serving to frame, not dominate. The resulting wines are built on tension, texture, and longevity — shaped more by line and light than volume.

The wines are elegant, layered, and enduring. Estate Chardonnay offers white peach, lemon curd, struck match, and saline length — a wine that regularly outperforms its price and pedigree in blind tastings. Coddington and Hunting Hill deliver single-vineyard character with depth and contrast — the former plush and ripe, the latter linear, mineral, and tightly coiled. Maté’s Vineyard, the flagship, is profound and architectural — citrus oil, crushed stone, almond skin, and quiet power built to unfold over a decade or more.

What defines Kumeu River is not only its excellence, but its consistency — a winery that has refined its craft through decades of humility, discipline, and unshakable vision.

These are wines that speak softly and carry long — luminous, poised, and shaped by the kind of patience that lets both place and time take the lead.
