La Valentina

La Valentina is a benchmark producer from Abruzzo, known for elevating the region’s native grapes through precision, organic viticulture, and a deep respect for place. Founded in 1990 in the hills above Pescara, the estate is part of a new generation of Abruzzese wineries that combines regional authenticity with a modern understanding of balance, freshness, and site-specific expression. Owned and run by the Di Properzio family, La Valentina has become one of the clearest voices in the story of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo’s quiet transformation.

The estate vineyards are located in Spoltore, in the Colline Pescaresi IGT and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC zones, where limestone and clay soils meet cool Adriatic breezes — ideal conditions for freshness, structure, and long hang time. Farming is fully certified organic, with an emphasis on biodiversity, cover crops, and low-impact viticulture that respects both tradition and ecology. Each parcel is harvested separately and vinified according to its natural rhythm, with a focus on preserving site identity.

In the cellar, winemaking is clean and restrained. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is the core varietal, vinified in stainless steel or large oak casks depending on the cuvée. Trebbiano, Pecorino, and Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo round out the range — all crafted with natural yeasts, minimal intervention, and a focus on freshness and texture. The flagship wine, Bellovedere, is a single-vineyard Montepulciano aged in oak and bottle for years before release, showing the full ageing potential of the variety when grown and handled with care.

The wines are vivid, layered, and composed. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo shows dark cherry, wild herbs, and graphite, with fine tannins and natural lift. Cerasuolo, the estate’s dry rosato, is crisp and structured, with strawberry, blood orange, and saline drive. Trebbiano and Pecorino are floral and mineral, with surprising depth and clarity. Across the range, La Valentina’s wines reflect a philosophy of quiet precision — wines of place, purity, and balance.

What defines La Valentina is its contemporary patience — a winery that honours Abruzzo’s past while quietly redrawing its future through soil, elevation, and thoughtful restraint.

These are wines that carry their region not as a burden, but as a language — expressive, fluent, and deeply rooted in the hills where the mountains meet the sea.
