Millton

Millton Vineyards & Winery is New Zealand’s original biodynamic wine estate — a pioneering Gisborne producer where time, soil, and philosophy converge. Established in 1984 by James and Annie Millton, the estate was among the first in the Southern Hemisphere to farm biodynamically, long before the practice gained global momentum. What began as a return to family vineyards has become a symbol of thoughtful winegrowing — one where connection to the land is not a concept, but a daily commitment.

The estate’s vineyards lie on the Riverpoint, Opou, and Clos de Ste. Anne sites, each with distinct soil profiles — from silty loams and river gravels to volcanic ash and clay. The vines, many ungrafted and some now over 40 years old, are dry-farmed and deeply rooted. Farming follows biodynamic rhythms, with compost teas, lunar cycles, and biodiversity guiding all decisions. These are living vineyards, nurtured by hand, where balance in the soil brings balance in the glass.

Winemaking is gentle and deeply intuitive. Fermentations are wild, often in large oak or clay, with minimal sulphur, no additions, and no filtration. Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Muscat lead the whites, while Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Malbec form the red core. Every wine is a product of patience — slow fermentations, extended lees ageing, and élevage that respects the shape of each vintage.

The wines are textured, aromatic, and filled with quiet energy. Te Arai Chenin Blanc is dry, layered, and mineral — quince, citrus skin, and saline lift over chalky tension. Opou Chardonnay is pure and poised, with fine acidity and gentle oak. La Cuvée du Trois Pinot Noir is wild-fruited, herbal, and earth-edged, while Clos de Ste. Anne releases — whether Viognier, Syrah, or field blends — offer deep structure and site expression. Across the portfolio, the wines feel unforced, almost ancient in their rhythm — carrying a life force rather than a style.

What defines Millton is not innovation, but devotion — a lifelong pursuit of harmony between earth, vine, and time.

These are wines that don’t follow a formula — they follow the land, shaped by seasons, silence, and the honest beauty of things grown and made with care.
