Mount Edward

Mount Edward is a Central Otago winery that moves with quiet energy — a producer known for wines of texture, nerve, and honest character. Founded in 1997 by Alan Brady, one of the region’s founding figures, and now led by winemaker and owner Duncan Forsyth, Mount Edward has evolved into one of New Zealand’s most distinctive small producers. With an ethos rooted in organic farming, low-intervention winemaking, and a fearless sense of individuality, Mount Edward stands apart — not by trying to define Central Otago, but by listening more closely to it.

The estate’s vineyards stretch across Gibbston, Lowburn, and Morrison Vineyard in Pisa, all organically certified and dry-farmed. Soils are glacial and schist-driven, with vines exposed to extreme diurnal shifts — yielding fruit of natural intensity and freshness. Farming is responsive and regenerative, and the team works with minimal machinery, believing that good farming happens more with boots on the ground than tech in the air.

In the cellar, the winemaking is loose-handed and intuitive. Fermentations are wild. Pinot Noir is often fermented with whole bunches, aged in older French oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Whites — including Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, and Chenin Blanc — are skin-fermented or lees-aged depending on the season and site. The cellar is more about feel than formula, always seeking vitality, flow, and a little wildness.

The wines are vibrant and layered. Pinot Noir shows wild berry, thyme, crushed herbs, and fine tannins — with a savoury edge that feels distinctly Otago. Riesling is dry, citrus-zested, and saline; Grüner Veltliner and Chenin Blanc bring spice, phenolic tension, and electric energy. These are wines that don’t chase polish — they chase truth. And they find it, again and again, in texture, restraint, and a little beautiful imperfection.

What defines Mount Edward is not just its independence, but its refusal to repeat — a winery that stays in motion, led by land, vintage, and the quiet hum of instinct.

These are wines that feel alive in the glass — energetic, textural, and never still, made for those who find clarity in wild places.
