Chateau Pichon Comtesse de Lalande
Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande is Pauillac with a feminine edge — a Second Growth whose grace has long set it apart in a commune known for power. Born from the 1850 division of the original Pichon estate, the Comtesse line evolved under the stewardship of women who shaped its elegance, most notably the indomitable May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, who guided the château into the modern age. Since its acquisition by the Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer in 2007, the estate has entered a new era: one of renewed precision, biodynamic ambition, and a deepened pursuit of finesse.
The vineyard spans 102 hectares, with 80 under vine, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. A significant portion lies just across the border from Saint-Julien, contributing to the wine’s aromatic lift and supple frame. The soils — deep Garonne gravel over clay and sand — lend structure and poise. The estate is now fully certified organic, with biodynamic conversion underway, and the cellar has been redesigned to allow for parcel-by-parcel vinification using gravity flow and minimal intervention. Each decision, from pruning to pressing, is guided by a philosophy of quiet precision.
The wine of Pichon Comtesse is poised and layered — a Pauillac of perfume and flow. Cabernet Sauvignon brings clarity, cassis, and structure; Merlot introduces roundness, floral lift, and a touch of silk. The tannins are fine-grained, elegant, and integrated, shaping a wine that glides more than grips. Aromas of violets, blackcurrant, graphite, and cedar unfold with calm confidence. Over time, the wine gains notes of rose petals, spice, and earth, always remaining true to its signature elegance and balance.
What distinguishes Château Pichon Comtesse is its philosophy of harmony. This is not a wine that imposes, but one that reveals — shaped as much by sensitivity as by strength. Under Nicolas Glumineau’s direction, the estate continues to refine its identity, building wines that speak clearly of place, yet carry the gentleness and precision of thoughtful hands.
Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande is for those who seek Bordeaux with soul and structure — a wine that whispers its power, unfolds with grace, and endures not through force, but through quiet, timeless allure.
