Prophets Rock

Prophet’s Rock is a high-altitude, low-intervention estate nestled in the rugged hills of Bendigo, Central Otago — a winery founded on faith in site and patience in craft. Since its first vintage in 2005, winemaker Paul Pujol has guided the project with a philosophy that bridges the wild beauty of the land with classical restraint. Inspired by time spent in Alsace and Burgundy, Pujol brings a calm, contemplative approach to winemaking — one rooted in the belief that great wines are grown slowly, with humility, and allowed to speak with quiet authority.

The estate’s two main vineyards — Home Block and Rocky Point — sit between 320 and 400 metres above sea level, planted on fractured schist, silty loess, and ancient alluvial soils. Dry-farmed and sustainably managed, these steep, low-yielding sites produce fruit of natural concentration, acidity, and aromatic depth. Every block is hand-tended and harvested, with minimal inputs and a deep focus on vine health and equilibrium.

In the cellar, intervention is minimal and detail is everything. Fermentations are spontaneous, sulphur use is low, and no fining or filtration is employed. Pinot Noir is fermented with whole berries, aged in seasoned French oak, and bottled without rush. Dry Riesling and Pinot Gris — two of the estate’s quiet stars — are handled with similar care, fermented and aged slowly in neutral vessels, including large-format oak and acacia puncheons, allowing texture and length to emerge naturally.

The wines are pure, composed, and deeply expressive. Pinot Noir is taut and mineral, with red cherry, wild herb, rose petal, and schist-driven depth — elegant rather than lush, precise rather than polished. Riesling walks the line between delicacy and drive, with lemon pith, lime blossom, and a crystalline, dry finish. Pinot Gris, fermented and aged like a fine white Burgundy, shows weightless power, orchard fruit, and savoury tension. Across the range, the wines reflect altitude, silence, and the unhurried energy of their origins.

What defines Prophet’s Rock is its stillness — a winery that listens more than it speaks, shaping wines with care, not ego.

These are wines that echo the land they come from — windswept, elevated, and composed in every sense of the word.
