Pyramid Valley

Pyramid Valley

Pyramid Valley is a North Canterbury estate defined by living soils, wild vines, and a biodynamic philosophy that prioritizes observation over intervention. Founded in 2000 by visionary couple Mike and Claudia Weersing, and now guided by Steve Smith MW and Brian Sheth, Pyramid Valley has become one of New Zealand’s most soulful and singular voices. It is not a project of volume, but of vibration — wines that hum with energy, texture, and the raw beauty of place.

The heart of Pyramid Valley lies in its Home Vineyard in Waikari: four tiny blocks planted on slopes of ancient limestone and clay, each shaped by unique soil compositions and named by their orientation and energy — Earth Smoke, Angel Flower, Field of Fire, and Lion’s Tooth. The estate is farmed biodynamically, with deep attention to seasonal rhythms, biodiversity, and soil vitality. Vines are dry-farmed, yields are minuscule, and everything is done by hand — from pruning to harvesting, from compost to canopy.

The winemaking philosophy is one of patience and transparency. All ferments are native, extractions are gentle, and élevage takes place in a mix of old oak barrels, amphorae, and clay eggs. Sulphur is used sparingly, if at all. Each wine is bottled unfiltered, a true expression of the life it carries from the vineyard. Alongside the Home Vineyard cuvées, Pyramid Valley now explores sites across North Canterbury, Central Otago, and Marlborough under its Botanicals Collection, extending its philosophy to other regions through carefully chosen grower partnerships.

The wines are alive with tension and texture. Pinot Noir is perfumed, fine-boned, and earthbound — red cherry, rose petal, forest floor, and smoky mineral lift. Chardonnay is coiled and saline — white peach, crushed stone, almond, and chalky persistence. Across all wines, there is a quiet luminosity: wines that speak not in volume, but in layers, shaped as much by soil and silence as by fruit or oak.

What defines Pyramid Valley is its devotion to the unseen — a belief that wine is not made, but guided, and that true character arises when we listen more than we shape.

These are wines of deep resonance — elemental, intimate, and carried by the breath of the land itself.
