Quinta de la Rosa
Quinta de la Rosa is a family-run estate perched high above the Douro River near Pinhão, where steep terraces, schist soils, and a spirit of independence define a singular voice in both Port and still wine. Passed down through generations of the Bergqvist family, the quinta has long defied convention — among the first to produce and bottle estate-grown Ports, and a pioneer in the now-thriving world of Douro table wines. Today, under the guidance of Sophia Bergqvist, the estate continues to blend tradition with innovation, always anchored in the authenticity of its land.
The 55-hectare estate vineyard clings to the dramatic slopes of the Cima Corgo, with vines planted on schist-heavy soils that fracture deep into the rock, forcing roots to seek water and nutrients. The result is naturally low yields and wines of power, structure, and mineral intensity. Farming is carried out with sustainability and balance in mind, with all fruit estate-grown and hand-harvested across some of the Douro’s most prized parcels.
In the winery — nestled within the original 18th-century buildings — both Ports and still wines are made with a focus on site expression and precision. For Port, traditional foot-treading in granite lagares is still practiced, with careful selection for Vintage, Tawny, and LBV styles. Still wines, including Touriga Nacional, field blends, and white blends, are vinified with minimal intervention, fermented in stainless steel and aged in French oak to enhance, not obscure, the vineyard’s voice.
The wines are powerful, layered, and elegant. Vintage Port is deeply structured with black fruit, spice, and schist-born grip, while Tawnies show finesse and lifted dried-fruit complexity. Douro reds offer depth and earth, with violet, black plum, and graphite woven into fine tannins and freshness. Whites, from high-altitude parcels, are floral, saline, and textural — a growing focus for the estate and a vivid counterpoint to the valley’s more robust expressions.
What defines Quinta de la Rosa is its integrity — a house that has stayed small to stay true, crafting wines that reflect not just the Douro’s grandeur, but its grit, nuance, and enduring soul.
These are wines shaped by river and rock, made with clarity and conviction — expressive, honest, and steeped in place.
