Stags Leap
Located in the heart of California's Napa Valley, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is one of America's most celebrated wine estates, with a history that helped change the world's perception of Californian winemaking. Founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski, the winery began with a vision to create wines of exceptional quality that could rival the finest in Europe. Just six years later, it achieved international fame at the historic 1976 Judgment of Paris, where its 1973 vintage outperformed some of Bordeaux's most prestigious estates in a blind tasting.
Set beneath the dramatic Stags Leap Palisades, the estate benefits from a distinctive combination of volcanic soils, warm sunshine and cooling breezes. These natural conditions have shaped the winery's identity, inspiring a philosophy that brings together richness, elegance and a strong sense of place. From its earliest days, careful vineyard management and attention to detail have remained central to its approach.
In 2007, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars entered a new chapter through a partnership between Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and the historic Italian wine family Marchesi Antinori. In 2023, the Antinori family assumed full ownership, bringing generations of winemaking experience while preserving the pioneering spirit that made the estate famous. The winery continues to embrace thoughtful innovation, combining modern techniques with a deep respect for its vineyards and heritage.
Today, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars remains a defining name in Napa Valley, recognised for its remarkable history, craftsmanship and enduring commitment to excellence. More than five decades after its founding, the estate continues to carry forward the vision that helped establish California among the world's great wine regions.
