Stéphane Ogier

Stéphane Ogier

Stéphane Ogier is one of the defining voices of the modern Northern Rhône — a winemaker who has brought Burgundian precision to the slopes of Côte-Rôtie and beyond. Based in Ampuis, at the heart of the appellation, the Ogier family has been growing grapes for seven generations, but it was under Stéphane’s leadership — beginning in 1997 — that the domaine was transformed into a benchmark estate. His vision: to express the full nuance of Rhône terroir with clarity, grace, and site-specific focus.

The estate cultivates over 20 hectares of vines across Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Condrieu, and Vin de Pays zones, including parcels in La Côte Blonde and La Côte Brune, each vinified separately to highlight contrast in soil, elevation, and exposure. Farming is sustainable and increasingly organic, with meticulous attention to canopy balance, low yields, and hand-harvesting across all vineyard sites. The domaine’s expansion into the Pays d’Oc and Collines Rhodaniennes offers a broader canvas for exploration, while maintaining the same unwavering commitment to quality.

In the cellar, the approach is detailed and intuitive. Syrah is handled with a light touch — partial whole-cluster, gentle extraction, and élevage in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels. Each vineyard is vinified separately, then blended with precision to create cuvées of both power and finesse. Condrieu is fermented and aged in barrel, yielding textured, aromatic whites that retain lift and freshness.

The wines are finely structured and expressive. Côte-Rôtie offers layers of black cherry, violet, olive tapenade, and smoked herbs, with seamless tannins and mineral backbone. Le Temps est Venu, the entry-level red from southern Rhône fruit, shows supple Grenache-driven fruit and savoury depth. La Rosine, a varietal Syrah from schist and granite soils, is pure, focused, and incredibly age-worthy. Condrieu is floral and stone-fruited, with honeysuckle, apricot, and a long, saline finish.

What defines Stéphane Ogier is not just precision, but patience — a winemaker who shapes each wine as a quiet study in terroir, tension, and light.

These are wines that carry the structure of stone and the lift of air — composed, enduring, and speaking fluently in the language of the Rhône.
