The Marlborist

The Marlborist is a contemporary wine project rooted in place, collaboration, and the rich patchwork of Marlborough terroir. Founded by Brooke Sergent, a Marlborough local with deep roots in the region’s wine industry, The Marlborist takes a fresh, detailed approach to single-site winemaking. It is a brand defined not by scale, but by connection — to growers, to soil, and to the evolving story of Marlborough beyond the familiar.

Rather than farming her own vineyard, Sergent works closely with a tight network of growers across Marlborough’s key subregions — Southern Valleys, Wairau, and Awatere — selecting parcels that speak with clarity and distinction. Each site is chosen for its ability to express varietal character with restraint, structure, and textural interest, often from mature vines and low-yielding blocks. Viticulture is sustainable, with an increasing emphasis on soil health and organic principles.

In the cellar, the winemaking is intuitive and minimalist. Fermentations are spontaneous where possible, and each parcel is vinified separately to preserve site identity. Sauvignon Blanc, the flagship, is handled with subtlety — wild-fermented in old oak, aged on lees, and built for structure and salinity rather than overt fruit. Pinot Noir is destemmed with a light touch, aged in seasoned oak, and shaped by finesse and savoury detail. The result is wines that break from expectation — more mineral, more architectural, and more expressive of subregional nuance.

The wines are precise and finely textured. Sauvignon Blanc offers grapefruit pith, sea spray, and a hint of flint — layered and elegant, with depth beyond the surface. Pinot Noir is lifted, herbal, and composed, with red fruit, soft spice, and a long, mineral line. Each cuvée reflects a specific place, season, and conversation between winemaker and grower, resulting in wines that are clear-eyed yet full of character.

What defines The Marlborist is its modern restraint — a brand that steps back from noise to let the land speak in focused, regional dialects.

These are wines that unfold with intention — subtle, saline, and crafted for those who seek the quiet depth of Marlborough beneath the brightness.
