Two Rivers

Two Rivers is a modern Marlborough estate rooted in clarity, edge, and the quiet ambition to elevate the region’s expressive potential. Founded in 2004 by winemaker David Clouston, the name refers to the confluence of the Wairau and Awatere Rivers — two valleys that shape the topography, tension, and identity of Marlborough’s wines. From its inception, Two Rivers has pursued a vision of Marlborough with greater texture, structure, and detail — wines that retain freshness, but move beyond simplicity into nuance.

Fruit is sourced from select vineyards across Marlborough’s subregions, with a growing focus on estate plantings in the Southern Valleys and Awatere. The diversity of soils — from stony riverbeds to clay-rich hillsides — provides a natural framework for varietal expression. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris form the core of production. Farming is rooted in sustainability, with increasing use of organic methods, minimal chemical input, and a strong focus on vine balance and soil health.

In the winery, Clouston takes a hands-on but intuitive approach. Sauvignon Blanc, the flagship, is handled in a more textural, layered style — with portions fermented in concrete eggs, amphorae, and neutral oak, then aged on lees. Pinot Noir is wild-fermented with partial whole bunch, aged in fine French oak, and bottled with minimal intervention. Fermentations are often spontaneous, and élevage is designed to enhance mouthfeel and mineral definition rather than overt ripeness or oak character.

The wines are lifted, saline, and finely structured. Convergence Sauvignon Blanc offers grapefruit pith, crushed herbs, and flint; Clos des Pierres Chardonnay is taut, smoky, and driven by acidity and lees texture. Pinot Noir is cool-fruited, with sour cherry, spice, and a gentle undercurrent of earth and stem. There is tension across the range — a Marlborough signature reimagined with detail and direction.

What defines Two Rivers is its sense of flow — a philosophy that marries fruit expression with mineral form, freshness with intention.

These are wines that move with precision, shaped not by trend, but by the contours of land, light, and an ever-present current beneath the surface.
