Vasse Felix

Vasse Felix

Vasse Felix is the founding estate of Margaret River — a benchmark for Western Australian wine and a quiet force of precision, texture, and coastal clarity. Established in 1967 by Dr. Tom Cullity, it was the first vineyard planted in the region, guided by the now-proven belief that this remote corner of Australia could produce wines of world-class finesse. Today, under the stewardship of the Holmes à Court family and chief winemaker Virginia Willcock, Vasse Felix continues to lead with thoughtful evolution, vineyard expression, and a philosophy rooted in balance and time.

The estate farms four distinct vineyards across the Wilyabrup subregion — a coastal zone defined by ancient gravel loam soils, cool maritime breezes, and extended sunlight. The primary focus is Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, with Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blends offering a broader lens on regional style. Farming is certified sustainable, with careful canopy management, low intervention, and a deepening commitment to biodiversity and regenerative practices.

In the cellar, the approach is instinctive and precise. Small-batch fermentations, wild yeasts, and thoughtful oak maturation define the process. Chardonnay sees whole-bunch pressing and fermentation in seasoned French oak, with minimal stirring. Cabernet is vinified gently, then aged in fine-grained French barrels with restraint. Each cuvée is shaped not for immediacy, but for quiet evolution — wines that reveal their detail with air and age.

The wines are detailed and expressive. Cabernet Sauvignon is layered with cassis, dried herbs, bay leaf, and gravelly tannins — linear and poised. Chardonnay is struck-match and sea breeze, with lemon curd, almond, and saline precision. Filius and Premier tiers offer accessible balance, while the flagship Tom Cullity speaks in long, slow tones of structure, earth, and quiet grandeur. Across the range, there is a signature interplay of freshness, subtle tension, and textural depth.

What defines Vasse Felix is not its history alone, but how it continues to refine its place within it — with curiosity, calm authority, and deep respect for land and lineage.

These are wines that echo their landscape — wind-shaped, salt-etched, and steady as the sea.
