Wirra Wirra Wines
Wirra Wirra is a McLaren Vale estate that blends history with heart — a winery known not only for its expressive wines, but for its sense of personality, place, and playfulness. Founded in the late 19th century by the eccentric cricketer and winemaker Robert Strangways Wigley, the estate was revived in the 1960s by Greg Trott, whose visionary spirit still shapes the culture today. From its red ironstone walls to its famed catapult and cricket pitch, Wirra Wirra remains an estate that embraces both craftsmanship and joy, without ever compromising on quality.
The vineyards are rooted in the red clay and sand of McLaren Vale, with additional fruit sourced from select growers in the Adelaide Hills and beyond. The estate is certified biodynamic, a reflection of its commitment to holistic viticulture and long-term stewardship. Farming focuses on soil vitality, biodiversity, and minimal chemical input, while yields are kept low to concentrate flavour and character. Each block is handled with precision — picked, vinified, and matured according to its unique expression.
In the cellar, the winemaking is purposeful yet unfussy. Fermentation occurs in small open-top fermenters, often with gentle hand plunging and extended maceration to develop texture and complexity. Maturation takes place in a mix of French and American oak, with careful integration rather than dominance. The focus is on varietal purity, regional identity, and drinkability — serious wines with a relaxed edge.
The wines are rich, expressive, and finely tuned. Church Block, the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz/Merlot blend, is plush, structured, and deeply satisfying — dark fruit, earth, spice, and generous tannins. The Absconder Grenache is lifted and vibrant, while The Angelus Cabernet shows depth, drive, and quiet elegance. Across the range, Wirra Wirra’s wines reflect McLaren Vale’s sun-soaked generosity tempered by careful craft and a cool undercurrent of restraint.
What defines Wirra Wirra is its ability to balance character with integrity — a producer that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but takes the land, the vines, and the wine very seriously indeed.
These are wines that welcome rather than impress, grounded in place and made with the kind of joy that quietly lingers long after the last glass.
