Bodegas Castaño

Bodegas Castaño

Bodegas Castaño is one of the leading voices in Yecla, a high-altitude DO in Murcia, southeastern Spain, where the rugged limestone soils and dry, continental climate shape wines of boldness, purity, and surprising finesse. A family estate since the mid-20th century, Castaño has played a key role in elevating Monastrell (Mourvèdre) from a rustic regional grape to a noble variety capable of depth, elegance, and longevity.

The vineyards, many of them old bush vines, lie between 500 and 750 metres above sea level, rooted in stony, calcareous soils that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The intense sunlight and sharp diurnal shifts preserve freshness and aromatic lift, even in Yecla’s arid conditions. The estate is farmed sustainably, with organic practices embraced in many of its parcels — balancing natural resilience with a deep respect for the land.

Winemaking is focused and expressive. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted, with fermentation tailored to varietal and site. Monastrell is often aged in French and American oak for complexity and structure, while stainless steel and concrete are used for brighter, more youthful expressions. Across the portfolio — from fresh, fruit-driven styles to dense, age-worthy cuvées — the aim is always to highlight the character of the grape and the singularity of Yecla’s landscape.

The wines are generous, textured, and regionally true. Castaño Monastrell is dark-fruited and earthy, with plum, dried herb, and supple tannins. Hécula, one of the estate’s flagship bottlings, is deeper and more structured — black cherry, clove, and wild Mediterranean brush. Colección, Casa Cisca, and other limited cuvées show the full power and refinement Monastrell can achieve — layered, savoury, and long on the finish. Whites and rosés are produced in smaller quantities, with the same focus on clarity and balance.

What defines Bodegas Castaño is its ability to marry place and purpose — crafting wines that honour the heat and stone of Yecla while offering structure, lift, and purity.

These are wines that rise from sun-cracked earth — bold but balanced, grounded in tradition and carried by the clear voice of Monastrell at its best.
