Chateau d'Yquem
Atop a gentle rise in Sauternes, Château d’Yquem stands not merely as a wine estate, but as an enduring emblem of rarity, grace, and time. With a history dating back to 1593 and crowned as the sole Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification, Yquem transcends its appellation. It is not simply the most revered sweet wine in the world—it is an experience, shaped by patience, light, and a singular sense of place.
The estate spans over 100 hectares of vineyards, planted primarily to Semillon (80%) and Sauvignon Blanc (20%), on a patchwork of gravel, clay, and sandy soils atop a limestone bedrock. The gentle slopes, morning mists, and warm autumn sun foster ideal conditions for Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot—a vital transformation that concentrates sugars, acidity, and aromatics. Each vintage is harvested through numerous meticulous passes, sometimes up to 10 per season, with pickers selecting berry by berry.
In the cellar, fermentation is conducted in new oak barrels and proceeds slowly, sometimes for months. Aging stretches across 20 months, also in new oak, during which the wine gains structure, depth, and composure. Only the finest lots are retained for the final blend; in rare years when quality does not meet Yquem’s standards, no wine is released.
Château d’Yquem offers an unrivaled expression of balance: lush yet crystalline, honeyed yet lifted, dense yet weightless. Notes of apricot, saffron, beeswax, and candied citrus unfold in kaleidoscopic layers, capable of aging gracefully for a century or more. In recent years, Y (Ygrec) d’Yquem, a dry white crafted with the same rigor, has emerged as a compelling companion—vivid, textured, and defined by saline minerality.
More than a wine, Yquem is a philosophy—one of unyielding selectivity, reverence for nature, and an unwavering pursuit of the exceptional. It is a timeless standard, an emotional benchmark, and a poetic echo of the land from which it springs.
Each bottle is not just a vintage, but a moment suspended—golden, elusive, and infinitely enduring.
