Churton
Churton is a winery shaped as much by philosophy as by place — a hillside estate nestled above the Waihopai Valley in Marlborough, New Zealand, where biodynamics, precision, and patience guide every decision. Founded in the late 1990s by Sam and Mandy Weaver, Churton has always moved in quiet contrast to the mainstream. Where others sought volume, Churton sought balance. Where many chased expression through technique, Churton pursued it through trust in the land. Today, it is one of Marlborough’s most distinctive voices, crafting wines of restraint, purity, and remarkable site fidelity.
The vineyard lies at 200–300 metres elevation on northeast-facing slopes, with soils of loess over clay and a diversity of microclimates shaped by aspect and altitude. The property is farmed biodynamically, with organic certification and a closed-loop ethos that considers the vineyard a living organism. Each block — named after astrological signs — is treated individually, harvested by hand, and vinified separately. Low yields, attentive canopy management, and minimal irrigation reflect a commitment to vine balance and flavor integrity. In the cellar, the approach is non-interventionist: wild ferments, neutral oak, and extended lees contact are tools for transparency, not stylistic effect.
Churton’s wines are luminous and textural — defined by energy, not volume. Sauvignon Blanc is taut, mineral, and saline — a far cry from the region’s tropical norm — with lime zest, white flowers, and crushed herbs carried on a spine of acidity and clay-born texture. Pinot Noir is perfumed and poised, offering wild cherry, dried rose, forest floor, and fine, chalky tannins. There is a thread of quiet complexity in every cuvée — a kind of calm confidence that speaks not only to terroir, but to the considered stillness of how it is handled.
What sets Churton apart is its philosophy of alignment — between vineyard and vine, farmer and season, wine and rhythm. Sam Weaver’s background in microbiology informs the precision; the biodynamic framework grounds the intuition. It is a winery where wine is not made but revealed, where decisions are guided by observation, not control.
Churton is for those who seek Marlborough reimagined — wines of shape and subtlety, cultivated through care and consciousness. It is a hillside estate with a holistic mind, producing wines that reflect not just place, but perspective.
