Craggy Range

Beneath the sculpted ridgeline of Te Mata Peak, where the plains of Hawke’s Bay stretch toward the sea, Craggy Range was founded on a promise: to craft wines of place, purity, and permanence. The dream took form in 1998, when Terry and Mary Peabody, in partnership with viticulturist Steve Smith MW, envisioned a legacy built not through inheritance, but through careful stewardship of land and vine. Their pursuit led to some of New Zealand’s most expressive terroirs—distinct, demanding, and full of latent possibility.

At the heart of the estate lies the famed Gimblett Gravels, a region of stony, free-draining soils formed by the ancient Ngaruroro River. Once overlooked, the land now yields wines of remarkable intensity and structure. Craggy Range’s vines sink deep into these gravel beds, absorbing the warmth of long, dry days and the precision of cool nights. In contrast, the Te Muna Road Vineyard in Martinborough offers a cooler profile—its limestone seams and breezy climate ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of detail and finesse.

From these landscapes emerge the winery’s most iconic wines. “Sophia,” a Merlot-led Bordeaux blend, evokes the richness and gravitas of the Gimblett Gravels. “Le Sol,” a Syrah of remarkable clarity and depth, channels minerality and spice in equal measure. In Martinborough, “Aroha” Pinot Noir distills nuance from the wind-carved slopes, while “Les Beaux Cailloux” Chardonnay delivers purity in light and line.

The winery itself mirrors its philosophy: elegant, grounded, and in concert with its surroundings. Nestled at the base of Te Mata Peak, it draws the landscape inward, offering a seamless connection between wine, place, and experience. Sustainability—both ecological and human—is central to every aspect of the estate’s operations, shaping a future as carefully as it honors the past.

Craggy Range is not just a name on a label—it is a conversation between stone and vine, climate and craftsmanship. With each vintage, the estate reaffirms its founding principle: that wines of enduring character can emerge when land is truly understood.
