Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier is one of Bordeaux’s quiet marvels — a Grand Cru Classé de Graves that has earned its place not through heritage alone, but through unwavering commitment to quality and authenticity. Hidden within a forest clearing in Léognan, far from the grand facades of the Médoc, this gravel-soiled estate produces both red and white wines of rare equilibrium. Since 1983, under the careful stewardship of Olivier Bernard and the Bernard family, Domaine de Chevalier has been elevated to one of the region’s most consistently elegant and quietly profound voices.

The vineyard stretches across 65 hectares — 45 dedicated to red varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot) and 20 to white (Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon). The terroir is classic Pessac-Léognan: deep gravel over clay and sand, offering superb drainage and a natural framework for wines of tension and longevity. Farming has been increasingly guided by organic and biodynamic principles, with careful attention to biodiversity and soil health. Harvesting is by hand, parcel by parcel, and carried out with precision and patience.

In the cellar, vinification is traditional and respectful. Reds are fermented in stainless steel and aged in French oak barrels — typically 40–50% new — for 16–18 months. The whites undergo fermentation and ageing in barrel, with bâtonnage adding texture without excess. Each cuvée is shaped with clarity and restraint, allowing the vineyard’s voice to emerge over winemaking signature.

The red wine is refined and structured, with Cabernet bringing cassis, graphite, and mineral tension, while Merlot adds silk, spice, and warmth. The tannins are fine and persistent, offering a long arc of aging potential. The white wine, one of the most celebrated in Bordeaux, is luminous and textural — Sauvignon Blanc contributing citrus, cut, and energy; Sémillon providing beeswax, white peach, and quiet depth. Both wines share a common thread: freshness, balance, and a sense of calm precision.

What defines Domaine de Chevalier is its integrity — its refusal to compromise on detail, and its belief that greatness is earned over time, not declared. Olivier Bernard’s long stewardship has brought the estate into global recognition, not through flash, but through fidelity: to land, to craft, and to silence between the notes.

Domaine de Chevalier is for those who seek Bordeaux at its most sincere — wines of luminous texture, quiet confidence, and enduring grace.
