Pre Arrival Offer, Wines due between December 2026 and February 2027
A beautiful expression of Tuscan Merlot, with concentrated dark cherry and ripe dark berry fruit at its centre. There is richness and depth here, but Galatrona is ultimately about elegance and balance, with the fruit carried by freshness rather than sheer weight.
Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship wine, made exclusively from Merlot grown in the estate's nearly ten-hectare Galatrona vineyard in Val d'Arno di Sopra. The vines sit at around 300 metres, on clay-rich soils mixed with schist, marl and sandstone. The clay's ability to retain water is particularly important for Merlot through Tuscany's warm, dry summers.
Petrolo has taken an increasingly natural approach to the vineyard since 2004 and has been certified organic since 2016. The grapes are hand harvested and carefully sorted before spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in cement. Gentle manual pumpovers are used to build structure while preserving the wine's elegance.
Following malolactic fermentation in wood, Galatrona spends 18 months in French oak, around one-third of which is new. The result is a concentrated but refined Merlot with texture, depth and persistence – a distinctly Tuscan interpretation of the variety and one of Italy's benchmark Merlots.

The 2024 Galatrona (100% Merlot) is a seriously beautiful, vivid wine. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and espresso are all laced together in the glass. Just bottled, the 2024 is very expressive. I can’t remember a Galatrona with this much class. Harvest took place from September 2 to 9. The 2024 spent 18 months in French oak, 30% new. This is so refined.

Savoury, vivid, crunchy red fruits of raspberry and redcurrant, layered with bright elderflower and white pepper. Love the fragrant and mouthwatering delicacy of this moreish 100% Merlot, showcasing a more delicate side of this grape. A wine that is very easy to recommend. Harvest first half of September, 33% new oak.

A racy, refined red, showing blackberry, black-truffle and violet aromas and flavors. Hints of fresh herbs like bay leaves and basil. Medium-bodied with crunchy fruit and firm tannins that turn creamy in the polished, textured finish. Lead pencil and sandalwood. Very impressive for the vintage. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable but try in two or three years.
