Inky ruby with a deep core, the 2020 Syrah from Quinta do Noval opens with a perfumed and savoury bouquet of black plum, wild blackberry, smoked meat, and cracked pepper, underpinned by notes of lavender, olive tapenade, and graphite. Grown on a single parcel of schistous hillside within the Douro estate, the Syrah is cultivated under intense sun and elevation, resulting in a wine of concentration and poise. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel, followed by 11 months of maturation in French oak barrels—approximately 50% new—enhancing texture and aromatic depth without overshadowing varietal character. The palate is full-bodied and layered, delivering dark fruit, spice, and mineral tension over firm yet polished tannins. The finish is long, savoury, and focused, marked by black pepper, smoke, and a lingering stony resonance.
