Deep ruby with garnet edges, the 2019 Château de Fonbel Saint-Émilion opens with a ripe, expressive bouquet of black cherry, plum, and violet, layered with notes of cedar, graphite, and warm spice. Owned by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone, Fonbel is situated just southwest of Saint-Émilion and planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Carmenère—an unusual yet compelling blend. The 2019 vintage, marked by optimal ripening and low yields, was vinified in concrete vats and aged in French oak barrels (about 30% new), resulting in a wine of both freshness and depth. The palate is supple and generous, showing dark fruit, cocoa, and a savoury mineral thread over fine, polished tannins. Acidity is well-integrated, lending lift and definition, while the finish is long and harmonious, with lingering notes of spice, dark berries, and a touch of earth.
