Bursting with raspberry, wild strawberry and ripe red plum, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux is immediately vibrant and expressive, with layers of licorice, dried herbs and subtle spice adding depth and complexity. There’s a brightness to the fruit that gives the wine real energy, balanced by a savoury Rhône character that slowly unfolds in the glass.

Crafted from 70% Grenache, alongside 20% Mourvèdre, 7% Cinsault, 7% Counoise and other permitted varieties, this is a beautifully composed expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape from a standout vintage. Grenache drives the wine’s generous fruit profile and texture, while Mourvèdre contributes structure and earthy depth. The Cinsault and Counoise lift the aromatics and bring freshness, helping the wine feel refined despite its concentration.

Full-bodied and firmly structured, the palate delivers layers of dark cherry, red berries, cracked pepper and warming spice, framed by ripe tannins that give the wine impressive shape and ageing potential. Despite the power, there’s a polished feel throughout, with freshness carrying the wine long through the finish.

Still youthful and tightly wound, this is a wine that will reward patience. While already compelling, a few more years in bottle will allow the full complexity and texture to emerge. A serious and age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape with depth, character and impressive balance.

Vinous, 94/100

Mixing 70% Grenache with 20% Mourvèdre, 7% Cinsault, 7% Counoise and other permitted varieties, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux is dashing. Sun-drenched raspberry, strawberry, red plum and licorice are front and center. Leafy shadings add gentle freshness. Full-bodied and concentrated, the 2022 is firmly framed by ripe tannins that provide solid structure. It will take at least four more years before to unleash its full potential.

James Suckling, 94/100

A textural, succulent and spicy Chateauneuf-du-Pape with sweet cherries, grilled meat, grilled thyme and some stones. It's full-bodied with fine tannins. Juicy center-palate with crushed-berry and dried-rose character and some candied orange in the energetic finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink from 2027.

The Wine Advocate, 95/100

One of my favorite wines at this address, the 2022 Les Hauts-Lieux, derives from vines planted on a cooler, higher elevation on calcareous soils. These grapes, including more Mourvèdre (20%), are picked 15 days later than the other grapes. Evoking aromas of dark cherries, ground pepper, iris, tapenade and dark olive, it’s full-bodied, powerful and structured with velvety tannins and a dense, concentrated core of fruit enhanced by notes of chocolate and spices that segues into a long, mineral and superb finish. It’s poised to reach its 20th anniversary in outstanding condition.
