Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is one of the defining estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, quietly producing some of the Rhône Valley’s most respected wines from its historic vineyards on the northern edge of the appellation. Established in 1905 and now in its sixth generation of family ownership, the domaine sits on 23 hectares of continuous vineyard bordering Châteauneuf-du-Pape, beneath the Mont Redon plateau and just down the road from Château de Beaucastel.

Under Jean-Paul Daumen, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has become a benchmark for modern Châteauneuf-du-Pape — wines of depth and concentration, yet with remarkable freshness and precision. The estate’s unique position, with northern exposure and full influence from the Mistral winds, gives the wines a lifted, energetic character rarely found in warmer southern Rhône sites. With no neighbouring vineyard directly to the north, the vines are fully exposed to cooling airflow, helping preserve acidity and aromatic detail even in warmer vintages.

Old vines are at the heart of the domaine, producing naturally low yields and intensely concentrated fruit. Farming here has long been rooted in organics and biodynamics, first converted by Jean-Paul’s father well before it became fashionable in the region. The focus remains firmly on healthy soils, biodiversity and vineyard balance, allowing each parcel to fully express its site and season.

The approach in the cellar is equally thoughtful. Fermentations are natural and intervention is kept to a minimum, with élevage designed to preserve purity rather than mask it. In recent years, the domaine has gradually reduced the proportion of Syrah in its blends as climate change has pushed the variety towards riper, heavier expressions. Grenache now takes a more prominent role, helping maintain the freshness, finesse and transparency that define the estate’s style.

Since 2018, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has sealed its wines with wax closures, chosen specifically for their ability to support long-term ageing and protect the wines as they evolve in bottle. It’s a small but meaningful detail that reflects the domaine’s commitment to longevity and precision at every stage of production.

These are unmistakably Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, carrying the depth, texture and complexity expected from the appellation, yet they remain composed, vibrant and finely detailed.
