Champagne Philipponnat
Tucked between forested hills and the River Marne, Champagne Philipponnat has quietly upheld a reputation for excellence since 1522. With deep roots in the village of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the family-run house has long been a guardian of Champagne’s Pinot Noir tradition, known for producing structured, expressive wines with precision, character, and unwavering integrity.
At the core of Philipponnat’s identity is a profound connection to its vineyards—most notably the iconic Clos des Goisses, one of the steepest and most sun-drenched vineyard sites in all of Champagne. This walled Premier Cru parcel, planted predominantly to Pinot Noir, yields wines of remarkable depth, tension, and longevity, and has become a hallmark for the house’s bold yet balanced style.
Philipponnat owns and cultivates 20 hectares of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, favouring Pinot Noir for its richness and vinous strength. The house practices sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention, ensuring that each cuvée speaks clearly of its origin. Dosage is kept low to preserve freshness and structure, while fermentation and ageing in oak barrels bring texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
The Royale Réserve Brut, the signature cuvée, offers a vibrant expression of Pinot Noir dominance—bright orchard fruits, toasted brioche, and a mineral finish. The Blanc de Noirs and Extra Brut cuvées push further into purity and tension, while vintage expressions and the Clos des Goisses bottlings represent Champagne at its most age-worthy and profound.
Philipponnat’s approach is meticulous but never showy. Base wines are vinified by parcel, allowing for precise blending, and reserve wines are kept in a solera-like perpetual reserve dating back decades—bringing complexity and consistency year after year. The result is a house style that is both structured and luminous, capable of ageing gracefully while remaining intensely drinkable.
Visually, the house balances heritage and restraint. Bottles are marked by classic gold and black labels, bearing the Philipponnat crest—a quiet emblem of quality and continuity.
Champagne Philipponnat is for those who seek Champagne with depth, clarity, and story. It is a house that doesn’t chase trends but rather deepens its roots, delivering wines that are unapologetically expressive and crafted for both connoisseurs and the cellar.
